Grave of Ida Benn

The grave of Ida Winifred Benn is situated only feet from that of her son, Major Anthony Alistair Benn, in Vernon (Vernonnet) Communal Cemetery.

Major Benn was killed in action near the end of the Battle of Normandy, on 27th August 1944. Having crossed the River Seine at Vernon with the Worcestershire Regiment he was involved in an advance on the hilltop village of Tilly. Many of his men were killed by a Tiger tank machine gun after being caught on an open road. Having managed to restore order, Major Benn was killed himself.
