something is coming to pieces

On a boiling hot day shopping in Paris on a day trip, I discovered that La Samaritaine, one of the three big central Paris department stores, is defunct, abandoned, and locked up. Obviously I'm one of the last to find out, but, this is like Selfridges closing down and an iconic building left to rot! How can that happen?
