I got a phone call from a friend of mine today.
He's been a friend for about 10 years ever since I met him when I joined the local camera club, but hadn't seen him for 4 or 5 weeks.
At that time, he was the president and I was impressed at his depth of knowledge of all things photographic. I was more impressed with his welcoming and helpful attitude, not just to me, but to everyone in the club. It turns out, he was one of the founding members.
Over the years, I listened to him encouraging new members, new photographers, always in the most positive manner. It was he who campaigned that our critique nights should not have scores, only suggestions to make sure that the more sensitive members were not destroyed by a poor result of one of their favourite shots.
He believes that photography is fun, forget the pixel peeping, do what you enjoy and be damned to anything else.

I went to see him in hospital today. It's terminal.

His only thoughts though, were about his wife, who doesn't enjoy the best of health either. So typical of the man.
He's not sure how long he has left, expecting to enter palliative care at some point soon. True to form, as I was leaving, he talked about how we need to live for today, our time is too short, get on with it.
This shot of a beautiful flower is not beautiful, but it's my attempt to remember the way he has lived his life.

Hank, this one's for you.
