River Allen at Staward Gorge, Northumberland
Day Three of our holiday in Cumbria. After a very interesting visit to the Nenthead Lead Mines (I didn't go on the tour down the mine!) we took a drive through the countryside and came across this spectacular gorge and river which cuts through the largest area of ancient woodland in the county. The designated walks through the woodland are really lovely and listening to all the birdsong and the sound of the water flowing by made you feel you were a million miles from civilisation, pure bliss. There are also the remains of an ancient pele-tower and a reconstruction of a Victorian summerhouse.
