The Letoon

Near Xanthos is the temple site known as the Letoon, dedicated to the goddess Leto who gave birth to twins Artemis and Apollo, fathered by Zeus. His consort Hera was so insanely jealous she pursued Leto and the twins seeking vengeance, so they had to flee from the Elysian Fields, eventually coming to Anatolia. Acording to legend they came to Patara beach in southern Turkey, and hence Leto became the main deity worshipped here, together with her offspring. The Letoon temple complex has a large temple to Leto and smaller temples to Artemis and Apollo. There's also another large theatre (the fifth we've seen in Lycia!).

Heading for home tomorrow and we're really pleased we've managed to see and do so much in just one week. What a fabulous country Turkey is.
