Warwick
We went to Warwick today to hear a talk by Jon Cooksey, the editor of the book Harrys War. This is part of the Warwick Literary Festival known as Warwick Words.
The book is the diary of the First World War soldier Harry Drinkwater, from Stratford upon Avon, who enlisted in 1914 and survived the horrors of the trenches to live until 1978. He kept a detailed journal of the day to day activities of his time in France on the Western Front including the battle on the Somme. He became an officer eventually and was posted to Egypt after the war.
The presentation was given in the Great Hall of the Lord Leycester Hospital, a medieval building given over for the housing of ex-servicemen and their wives. It was never a medical establishment and was originally the home of the Warwick Guilds.
The picture is the entry to the courtyard (if you look carefully you may be able to see a porcupine).
