The World Cup: Garston, Rio de Mersey
The World Cup....and nationalism...
Coming from Liverpool, it's a safe bet to say that I like my football, even though I am always ready for a summer break. But as an internationalist, I'm not sure about inter-national football matches because of my discomfort with nationalism.
This blip picture would probably be grist to the mill for the "yes" campaign in Scotland. I now live in England, but some time ago, both before and after University, I lived in Scotland. It was there that I had my first proper job and spent my first married years and I still feel a close emotional affinity to the place. Whilst I can value and appreciate the importance of identity and culture and the need for more local control, which is something that most of us share, I remain to be convinced that the addition of one more nation state would represent a step forward.
