Faith

Being a practitioner of Zen you learn that there is no need to look outside of yourself for a sense of the divine - we are all divine each and everyone of us - you need only look inward to realize it.

I still find some comfort though in these sorts of shrines regardless of denomination - in the end it is a manifestation of our own need to seek a higher meaning and purpose and that is something that connects us all as sentient beings.
