Welwyn Garden City
The founder of the garden city movement, Sir Ebenezer Howard, wanted garden cities to be self contained communities, with residential, commercial and industrial areas surrounded by rural farmland. He intended the garden cities to be based on a concentric design, with wide radial boulevards creating a sense of space.
In the end, he only built two garden cities to these principles: Letchworth and, later, Welwyn (both in Hertfordshire, England).
Welwyn Garden City remains a spacious environment with plenty of public gardens and wide streets. The view here is right in the centre of the town, looking down towards the central shopping centre which is named after Howard.
