Sir Archibald McIndoe (1900-1960)

At long last we have a memorial to the great man, Sir Archibald McIndoe. The inscription below his statue, which was unveiled this week by the Princess Royal says 'He led a pioneering team whose treatment gave the lives back to severely burned airmen of the Guinea Pig Club and other casualties of WWII. When these brave men ventured into the town no mirrors were to be seen in any of the pubs so that for a very brief time they could forget their dreadful wounds. Today this is still a pioneering hospital for the treatment of burns and plastic surgery.
