Faces in the Elevator

My daughter took me, along with my sister-in-law and a friend, to the Edgefield Winery in Portland, Oregon for a belated 70th birthday celebration. (She was in Georgia for my birthday) It was a fun weekend. We ate lunch at a brewery, stopped to see all of the waterfalls along the Columbia River Gorge, and then stopped at the dam and the fish hatcheries ! The hotel had once been a poorhouse (Why don't we have those now?) A company called McMinneman's (?) buys up old buildings, restores them and turns them in to restaurants, hotels, theaters etc. My daughter rented a room for six, which meant two very utilitarian bunk beds and a queen size bed. Pipes ran through the room and faces were painted on the joints of all of them. The walls told the story of people who had lived in the poorhouse and how they ended up there. We slept in the Jack Penny room, I believe. At one time he had owned his own bar and then run in to hard times. "Our" bathroom(s) were at the end of the hall and shared with all the other guests on the third floor. All the walls all through the building had unique pictures, many of them depicting life in a poorhouse and many others just fun art - like the inside of this ancient elevator! There were many buildings on the property that had once been power sources, laundries etc. and are now a brewery, a wine tasting room, a theater and a sauna. There were acres of grapes growing and fantastic flowers everywhere. It was not the most comfortable hotel I have ever stayed in and there was no air conditioning or telephones or a t.v. (which was surprising, but nice) it was all very interesting and so much fun!
