Heaven part 3
My friends Josie, Linda and I went on another orchid hunting trip today, this time to Sandwich bay in Kent.
it was absolutely amazing!!!!
When we arrived at the bird observatory they were just about to empty their 2 moth traps! well, that in itself was amazing, there were so many beautiful moths to photograph, including Puss moths, Small elephant hawk, Large elephant hawk, Eyed hawk, Poplar hawk and at least 5 Privet hawks!, July highflyer, Water ermine, white ermine, cream bordered green pea to name but a few ! and best of all my fave moth the beautiful peach blossom.
Moving on from the moth trapping (eventually) we made our way to the sea across the golf course and sand dunes. The habitat was amazingly rich and we saw so many lovely plants, Bedstraw broomrape, viper's bugloss, sea holly, Southern marsh orchids, pyramidal orchids and ... the orchid we came to see the very, very beautiful Lizard orchid Himantoglossum hircinum. These large and stunning orchids derive their common name from the flowers which really do look like lizards as you can see from today's blip. After this we went to the old hoverport at Pegwell bay (which is now a brownfield site) with an amazing stand of Bee orchids and a single Corncockle!
We went to another location on the way home, and were treated to Ringlets, Marbled whites, large skippers and best of all Late spider orchids.....
WHAT A DAY!!!!!!
