Omaha cemetery
Sorry to hit you all with another heart-rending image but I feel I have to blip this.
This is the American military cemetery above Omaha beach where 2400 US soldiers died on 6th June 1944. The beach was heavily defended and due to a miscalculation the US support tanks were launched too far out and all but two sank and were lost. There were many more casualties in the ensuing weeks and there are 9,387 graves in the cemetery. The rows of crosses and stars of David seem to go on for ever. This cemetery featured as the opening sequence in the film 'Saving Private Ryan'.
As you will have gathered we are now in Normandy at a campsite just a few km from the D-Day beaches and are catching a ferry back to Portsmouth tomorrow evening.
