Banner, Pollokshaws Parish Church

Sad reason to be here today, attending a funeral. An uplifting service, beautiful music and hymn singing, encouraging readings from the Bible, and special memories. Gorgeous flowers too. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

I have lived on the south side for over thirty years, but didn't know where the church was. I did a recce on Friday. Couldn't find it, so a second visit over the weekend, to see it set back from the street, beside the Police Station.

Inside has been completely renovated. Old pews removed, and the wood used to create a raised platform area and a beautiful large wooden cross. So bright and welcoming, with the sun streaming in the windows. The shape, style and high balcony reminded me of old Free Church meeting places.

The banner celebrates 200 years of Pollokshaws being given "Burgh" status. The burgh lies about three miles south of the city. The banner records crafts and work locally over the years : lace-making, coopering, pottery and threads/weaving. The coat of arms is linked to the Maxwells of Pollok, with the tree representing the "shaws" or wooded area. I met the lady who had designed and worked this piece. She was so kind and enthusiastic, and told me a group is working on a further six.
