Puffin love

Day six of our Pembrokeshire holiday.

We went to Skomer Island to see the seabirds nesting. We walked round a lot of the island in hot sun, the paths strewn with the bodies of manx shearwaters which were caught and killed by black backed gulls as they made their nocturnal fishing flights from their nesting burrows.

We got to the part where the puffin burrows are, they're so beautiful that we watched them for ages. They were beak tapping like this pair and going in and out of their nest burrows. We only saw one bird with sand eels so the chicks can't have hatched yet. Herring gulls were waiting to take their fish and black backed gulls waiting to catch the birds as they emerge from the burrows - it's hard being a seabird! Unfortunately the sun was glaring so not the best for bird photography.
