The Edge of the Wold

Stained glass windows

Another photograph of a small pearl-bordered fritillary. This one was warming up by presenting its open wings to the early morning sun. These are ideal conditions for a backlit shot illuminating the wing patterns of the underside, while the butterfly is still relatively inactive. The opportunity wasn't there for long, it was soon on the wing. This one has lost an antenna, it's perhaps been flying for a week or two now, and the perfect adult that emerged from the chrysalis is suffering wear and tear.

It was a beautiful start to the warmest day of the year so far. I stopped to speak to the Arnside Bigfoot on the way up the Knott at 0630, and even then it was quite humid.
