Iceland Day 4 - Skaftafellsjokull

Our overnight accomodation which was a lodge in the lava field was a brilliant place and when I woke up at about 4.30 and saw bright blue skies and nice cloud formations I decided to get out of bed and explore as we arrived in the rain, and the windows were fogged up so we didn't really have an idea of our surroundings. It was totally isolated in the lava field which was covered in a thick carpet of moss with views of snow topped mountains and glaciers.

We called at some more waterfalls and Nupsstaour traditional village with the turf houses before heading to Skaftafell National Park which is the largest icecap in Europe. We walked up a trail which gave stunning views over the volcanic flood plains created when the volcanos under the ice cap erupt and melt the ice causing catastrophic flooding. We eventually reached the top where we had even more stunning views of the glacier Skaftafellsjokull. It was a hard climb in hot conditions, but the views made it all worth while as you can see from this blip. We then descending by another path past some more waterfalls and we saw some Ptarmigan. We then headed to our overnight accommodation at Reynivellir which is near Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon.
