St Baldred's Cradle
Out today with a U3A geology walk round the small volcanic mound that is known as St Baldred's cradle - although, strictly speaking, as this photo shows, the 'cradle' is a small inlet caused by ingress of the sea through a crack in the basalt clefts; the basaltic mound is a volcanic plug, some 300 metres across. It is part of a chain of volcanic activity along the East Lothian coast.
There is much more to the story of the geology here, too complex to explain in a blip (and I still have to sort it out in my brain) but David Stevenson, our guide, pointed out many features of particular interest.
