Summer and Smoke

Between courses at a birthday feast on a still evening
a couple step outside for a cigarette. More than
anything it was the smoke rising against a background
of summer's intense greening that caught my attention.
Such new life is in stark contrast to the ageing inflicted
on what should be pink healthy lungs by the dark sticky
residues left behind by each breath.
