Bayeux Bell, Bayeux Cathedral, Normandy

Backblip

Today we visited Bayeux about 100km north east of our holiday gite. Unknown to us, it was to be a significant location of the D-Day commemorations in two days time as it was the first town to be liberated after the D-Day landings. On arrival in the town we were aware of many uniformed individuals from the British armed forces. We visited the cathedral which is an incredibly beautiful building and discovered on display a new bell dedicated to 'peace and freedom' The bell was to be dedicated in two days time in a service we later discovered to be attended by members of the Royal British Legion, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, David Cameron and other world leaders.

Following a wander round the town and soaking up some of the atmosphere, we visited the Bayeux tapestry and the hugely informative Battle of Normandy museum.

A great day out and a privilege to be in the town a few days before the historic commemorations.
