The Old Forge

From a very small garden pond, this is the slightly less well known buff yellow variant of the stinking iris (Iris foetidissima), so called because if you lightly pinch its leaves it gives off a smell redolent of beef-flavoured crisps. As well as having this rather delightful flower, this iris also produces bright red berries in split pods over the winter.

Not what Lionel Bart had in mind when he wrote it (as a rock'n'roll number) for Cliff's debut acting role in the film Serious Charge. Cliff's subsequent recording of the song as a ballad gave him his first number one. This version was recorded for a Comic Relief charity single.
