Astilbe x arendsii 'Deutschland'
Astilbe performs well in rich, damp soil, where it won’t dry out. Being shade tolerant this white Astilbe is perfect for a dark corner in the garden that needs a bit of brightening. The graceful, airy feathery flowers can be 2 to 3 feet high and look lovely massed . The German nurseryman Georg Arends (1863-1952) was responsible for an array of beautiful astilbe hybrids, including the “Visions” series and this pretty white plume. Athough he died broken by the damage to his plants from the ravages of WWII, his sons and now his granddaughter have carried on the nursery tradition and his great granddaughter is a landscape architect. I’m sure that would have made him very happy.
