Buck up!

One of a collection of old postcards I have, this one dates from the beginning of the 20th century.

I suppose this was the kind of message you'd send to someone who was depressed, or feeling down. "Buck up!"

Alfred Lester (1872-1925), was a classically-trained actor turned Music-Hall and Variety star. His always lugubrious manner caused much hilarity on stage and off.
