Warpaint
After yesterday’s energy, we took it easy in the morning. We set out to visit the upper parts of Porto. The famous Livraria Lello, the photography museum in the old prison and Bolhao Market. On recommendation from the hostel, we got francesinhas at a local restaurant called Santiago, supposedly some of the best in town. Francesinhas are this colossal dish local to Porto, basically a croquet-monsieur on steroids with an excellent beer-wine-spicy sauce. Even Emma’s special vegetarian version (“but there won’t be anything in it…?”) was excellent. I love it when food is a highlight of a trip.
Anyway, what else? The weather was a bit grimmer today, so we decided to hold off on the photo taking for when the sun would come out. We’re shooting film exclusively this week. At some point, we decided to head back to the hostel, grab a quick nap and head off to the festival. Except we ended up watching the end of a Roland Garros match instead of napping.
We chilled on the grass to see Television. Their performance was supposed to be a big deal. Warpaint afterwards was particularly cool. Retrospectively, they’re definitely a cool listen. This photo is of them performing at sunset. Same goes for Trentemoller, who are more on the dancey / dark side. Pixies were definitely a highlight. We were right in the mosh pit for their 90-minute set. It was immense, couldn’t have asked for a better time. So many tunes as well. A couple other acts didn’t stand out so much so we drifted from one to the other meeting some people along the way.
But the end was definitely the best. We spent a half set at Mogwai and a half set at Darkside, tripping out all the way on their dark and spacey compositions. Excellent vibe from those performances. By the time we got to sleep around 4am or so, we felt elated as can be.
That was probably the best part of this trip: the state of complete elation, probably a combination of the music, the end of our degrees and the beautiful setting. Can’t really describe it…
