The devil amongst us

This piece of masonry in the British Museum is from inside a medieval church. I am fascinated with the narrative aspect. Amongst the illiterate congregation, visual reminders and prompts of the biblical message were key. For the same reason I love the Mystery Plays.

And like the Mystery Plays, the stonemason has produced a cheeky, lively representation. It may not be the intention, but the devil looks rather fun to 'hang out' with.
