White Beaked Dolphins!

Dolphin Day
Anchorage : Stornoway
Distance Travelled : 70.7 miles

Yet another cloudy day as we set off from Loch Roag to head back out into the swell and waves. Our early enthusiasm started to wane as the only sightings were of creel buoys for the long trip up the coast until we finally rounded the Butt of Lewis into flatter waters.

After the first sighting of the day (a porpoise) a large number of diving gannets promised more to come and 3 sightings of white-beaked dolphins followed. These were the first ever sightings of these dolphins for everyone on board (except Tom), and large slices of Tom’s chocolate cake in between sightings just added to the excitement.

Stornaway harbour was not the most scenic, but we were glad to be moored up after 10 ½ hours of surveying. Especially as haggis, neaps and tatties were on the menu.
