Life from city to village

Run Down

DDW's June 2014 Movie Challenge - My Fair Lady

Its been a while since I saw My Fair Lady. Its always been a bit of a favourite.
The story: Eliza is a match girl. The story doesn't go into it, but life for match girls was awful. They usually ended up with horrendous facial disfigurements. Eliza is young, and Prof Higgins makes a bet with his friend that he can turn her into a lady, by changing her accent. Along the way, it asks the question - what is to to be in any class?

Which brings me to my photo. Taken today, this is in a run down area. The house is a large Victorian dwelling, but its location, in essentially an immigrant estate for a hundred years, has taken its toll, and it is currently abandoned. As in the film, the poorest areas can be the most vibrant, but that masks a tough life. Although we don't have the risks of the match girls any more, life for women can still be markedly harder in these areas.
