Fruit?

No idea what these are but they are appearing on trees near to my apartment. They don't look particularly appetising and there's not a mad rush of birdlife swooping in to steal them. This was a windfall and it doesn't appear to be attracting insects or bees either.

You're a smart lot out there - any thoughts?

One that would have the fruit must climb the tree.
