The Staffordshire Hoard

One of the most important treasures in British history was discovered last year in the ancient lands of Mercia, in modern Staffordshire. The treasure trove, of magnificent gold items, the booty of war and conquest, has since been valued at more than £3 million and we are now trying to keep this vital example of Staffordshire craftsmanship where it belongs - here in the West Midlands.

An appeal to raise the money concerned in the next few months was launched and the battle is now on to retain the hoard, probably in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery where it was first introduced to the public. I queued on the first day and you could touch the excitement ! Breathtaking workmanship and glorious art - the true culture of our area.

The appeal was launched - on the same day as the appeal for the earthquake in Haiti. And here lies a real dilemma. You cannot ignore the needs of humanity and turn your back on mankind. But must Art, History and Culture always take a back seat in these circumstances ? ?

I cheated - I donated the same amount to both appeals - I sat on the good old British fence. (sorry, bank manager)

No, the borrowed and beautiful bracelet is NOT part of the Staffordshire Hoard, but the grass is pure Staffordshire - and I am too.
