Bare naked carving
I walk past this house most mornings on my way to work.
The house, on Palace Street, dates from the 15th or 16th Century I think and is one of the best preserved mediaeval houses in Canterbury. I love the carved wooden right-angle supports; there are two of them, which are similar but not identical. This one is in the form of a rather hideous naked women who is openly displaying her voluptuous (?) breasts. I'm sure the carpenter who carved this figure, and her sister, did so with a smile. His skill and humour give me pleasure every time I see these carvings.
And yes the carver almost certainly was male because the carpenter's guilds were (usually) exclusively male.
