Yellow fish
When I was a child yellow fish was a real treat. We'd have it at my gran's and eat it with bread and butter in front of the telly so that she could watch the wrestling. Of course the fish was a far brighter yellow then because, we now know, it was coloured with a dye which contained coal tar or some other such carcinogen. It would be bought fresh from the fishmongers on Princess Road; glowing against the white wrapping paper that would then be wrapped in a few sheets of the Manchester Evening News from earlier in the week - this was to keep the fish fresh, or at least cold, as we meandered along to get the rest of the shopping and stop to have a chat with the woman from three-doors-up; the one who has two lads and one is a bit of a bad 'un.
I had this with a Mornay sauce, fresh asparagus and new potatoes but it still reminded me of that little house in Moss Side nearly 50 years ago and Jackie Pallo in black and white.
