Holy Isle, Firth of Clyde
Holy Isle is an island in Lamlash Bay, just off the Isle of Arran and measuring around 3 km long (1.9 miles) by 1 km wide (0.6 miles), Holy Isle has an ancient spiritual heritage which stretches back to the 6th century. It is endowed with an ancient healing spring, the hermit-cave of a 6th Century monk, St Molaise, and evidence of a 13th Century Christian Monastery. Some runic writing is to be found on the roof of St. Molaise's cave and a Viking fleet sheltered between Arran and Holy Isle before the Battle of Largs.
A sacred site dedicated to peace and well being, there is a Centre for World Peace and Health at the north of the island where an ongoing course and retreat programme takes place. There is a closed Buddhist retreat at the south of the island.
