Not the real Symi
We've been coming to Symi now and again for many years; in fact, every time we want a hot, relaxing holiday. Last time was two years ago, and as we were passing through Rhodes on the way here we saw one of these brightly coloured land trains and rather sniffily commented that we were glad they didn't have anything like that on Symi. We got the ferry and arrived in Symi and what did we see? You've guessed it. And at the same time a new hotel had opened using some of the old houses as rooms, and had brought in a pony and trap to transport guests and provide rides. Now, on an island more used to working donkeys, goats and sheep, a pony and trap looks rather like a pork chop at a Jewish wedding. Certainly some of the residents don't like them. However, on an island whose main income is tourism these two are the only things you would see in this vein and there's no doubting that they are popular with the boatloads of day trippers from Rhodes that arrive for a few hours through the day, so they are helping to bring money onto the island.
Very lazy day today. After a trip down to the harbour to get some cash we got the bus over to Pedi where I lay on a sun bed and slept for most of the day. Thank heavens for P20 sunblock!
