Flathead Lake
Driving home from Kalispell along Flathead Lake. Time for a pit-stop. The lake, the largest fresh-water lake west of the Mississippi, is calm during the rain and a lone fishing boat plies the glassy waters. This scene belies the usual turbulence during a storm when 6-foot waves can swallow that little boat in a trice. It is also the home of the Flathead Monster....no doubt the sister to the Loch Ness Monster. The Flathead is also home to hundreds of cherry orchards along its east shore...relished around the world. Any US cherries you may find in July/August are from Flathead Lake orchards. (Washington's cherries are on the market now.) I'll take you on a cherry-picking jaunt next month! The vineyards on the west shore produce some sweet wines that are popular.
I'll be glad to get home. 2 long days at the foundry amongst the noise, metal dust and chemicals takes a toll. No wonder they are second only to coal miners in mortality rate. You have to love it....well, I do.
