Epitaph

In Douglas, Lanarkshire on 14th May 1689 The Cameronian Regiment was raised as part of The British Army.

The statue depicts the regiment's 1st Colonel James Douglas Earl of Angus pointing to the surrounding hills where he was able to raise so many loyal men.

Just 3 years later James Douglas was killed leading his men against the French at the battle of Steinkirk (Flanders). The Cameronians went on to give distinguished service in every major campaign of The British Army for 279 years.

On this spot on 14th May 1968 the regiment was disbanded and its flag lowered for the last time.

Today I attended the funeral service for a young Douglas man who was born on 15th May 1968 (one day after the disbandment).
