Matariki magic
Mid winter or Matariki. The local youth group did a hangi with enough food to feed several hundred. Koha ie gifts or donations are requested for the food. Lots of lamb, chicken, potatoes, kumera, and pumpkin in a foil package. It was really tender and yummy.
A hangi means cooking food for several hours in a hot pit in the ground, basically steaming the food. Once the fire pit is really hot, the ashes are raked out or it tastes smoky, and the stones or in this case, iron bars are left in for the heat. The food was wrapped in foil. The foil bundles put in a metal baskets, and then all covered with damp paper and cloth, more water is added to make steam. A few hours later it is ready. So effective for a big crowd.
There was also entertainment singing, hakas etc two big bonfires, giant bubbles, and finally a great fireworks display
