101 Old House Field, Itchingfield
As we move from early summer into mid summer, the crops are really beginning to ripen and this crop of Barley may well be harvested by the end of July.
This area of land in Itchingfield has changed out of recognition since the Tithe Map was drawn up in 1839. All the hedgerows between the four roads that mmake up this area of land of have all been grubbed out many years ago with one new house and a vast single field created. Field 101 was called Old House Field and was owned by Sir Timothy Shelley, a relative of the Poet who was born at Field Place near Broadbridge Heath. The field was occupied at the time of the survey by Nathanial Knight and covered an area of 7 acres and 25 perches and was then as now, arable. Nathanial Knight lived at nearby Fulfords Farm that this field was a part of. Only the barns and farm buildings remain as the timber framed house was demolished in the 1960's. The barns are about to be converted into homes.
