Puffins near the Castle O' Burrian
I went to Westray on a day the forecast said would be mainly cloudy with some rain so of course it was blue skies and sunshine all day. Not that I'm complaining.
I took my bicycle and went along to the best easily accessible sites for puffins in Orkney- the Castle O' Burrian. I enjoyed watching the puffins and was very surprised to see a fulmar on the water eating a large purple jellyfish. I knew turtles eat the jellyfish so it makes sense that other creatures would too, but I'd never seen it. There is taste in jelly and protein in fish, but what can there be in jellyfish?
I cycled along to the Bay of Swartland and lunched on the beach then along to the Bay of Tuquoy. When I stopped, arctic terns immediately started mobbing me, swooping very low overhead and shrieking. I could see several chicks on the beach so that was good news; it is a species that has been failing to breed here. Maybe this year will be a good one for them. I didn't hang around but turned about and headed back. More shots here.
