Fuchsia
The Fuchsia Tree
" O what if the fowler my blackbird has taken?
The sun lifts his head from the lip of the sea.
Awaken, my blackbird, awaken, awaken!
And sing to me out of my red fuchsia tree!
O what if the fowler my blackbird has taken?
The mountains grow white with the birds of the sea:
But down in the garden, forsaken, forsaken,
I'll weep all the day by my red fuchsia tree."
Old Manx ballad
I adore fuchsias because they remind me of childhood summers. In Co. Down the hedgerows are so colourful with wild fuchsia ( the red and purple coloured one). I have two different varieties growing in planters in my garden and this one (Snowcap) is the first to flower.
The song above is one I used to sing in the folk song classes of the many music festivals I competed in when I was growing up.
