Rosa filipes 'Kiftsgate'

Rosa filipes is a species rose from Western China, and the cultivar 'Kiftsgate' was first noticed at Kiftsgate Court Gardens in the Cotswolds, but nobody knows where it originally came from. The original plant dates from 1938 and is said to be the largest rose in Britain, measuring 80 feet (24 m) x 90 feet (27 m) x 50 feet (15 m) high.

I think, if uncut, it would get bigger than that. Mine was planted about 8 years ago and is now roughly 7m high... and were its supporting tree twice that height, 14m it would be. Most places that sell it tell you it will grow to a height and spread of 10x6m. Yes... and the rest!
Only grow this if you have space. LOTS of space.

This is the Mummy and Daddy of all climbing roses, and the thorns are vicious. If you want to rid yourself of your neighbour, go ahead and plant one next to the wall... it will grow around his feet as he walks, tripping him over and shredding his clothes. It will grow into his bedroom window and throttle him in the night.
It is, in fact, a menace.

But... when in full bloom, it is also stunningly, overwhelmingly, breath-takingly beautiful. I found this wonderful description on a blog I intend to look into a bit more shortly:
