Cardinal Beetle

As I was cutting the grass this evening I noticed this Cardinal Beetle resting on some grass in the wild patch by the river.
Called the Cardinal Beetle due to its bright red colouring. The larvae are predators living under the bark of dead or dying trees or stumps so the adults tend to occur near such features especially where there are abundant flowers. The adult beetles are rather slow-moving, flying lazily from flower to flower or settling on tree trunks. They are widespread and moderately common throughout Britain.
They usually have a black head, but this species P.serraticornis has a red head.
