Norton Priory undercroft
Forecast rain today , none really materialised. Visited the Museum , just in case.
Norton Priory was founded in 1134. It was home to an Order of Augustinian Canons (priests who lived in a monastic community) and saw several phases of building and rebuilding, culminating in 1391 with its elevation to Abbey status. Today, much of the original layout of the buildings - the cloisters, church, refectory and dormitory can be seen as well as the surviving 12th century undercroft.
The Abbey met its end in April 1536 during the first phase of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. The buildings and estate were bought by the Brooke family who lived here for the next 400 years.
