English Greats

Continuing DDW's Prop challenge using the One Pound Coin, my theme for tonight celebrates England and the English Oak, which was the design on the back of the coins minted in 1987 and 1992.

The avenue of Wellingtonia (named for the Duke of Wellington, another English great) on my estate, and surrounding area, is interspersed with beech, sychamore, and of course, the mightly Oak. The Oak has for centuries been a national symbol of strength and survival, and has played an important part in our culture including use for building since Roman times.
