It's my adopted USA grandson's 11th birthday today and he is somewhere 5000 miles in that direction at Summer camp. The miracle of power and communications that comes from these wires mean that the Atlantic is no longer the barrier to keeping in touch that it once was. Who remembers when a transatlantic phone call had to be booked a week in advance?
