Saachi Gallery, Chelsea, London
Opened in 1985, this gallery shows the personal modern art collection of Charles Saachi. This is the third site for the gallery - it has been in North London and on the South Bank before here in the old Duke of York's Headquarters in Chelsea.
After the first few years showing American artists, the gallery has featured Young British Artists since the famous show by Damien Hurst in 1992 including a shark in formaldehyde. Saachi has exhibited all of the key young modern British artists of the last twenty years including Sarah Lucas, Rachel Whiteread and Tracey Emin. The aim of the gallery is to make modern art more accessible to everyone.
Charles and Maurice Saachi founded their advertising agency Saachi & Saachi in 1970. In 1995 they were forced out, and set up a new agency M&C Saachi.
Charles was born into wealthy Iraqi Jewish family in Baghdad in 1943. His father moved the family to London after the war and created a successful business by buying two textile mills. As a teenager, Charles became fascinated by pop culture and started collecting things - from cigarette cards to jukeboxes and Superman comics - and started his lifelong interest in modern art.
