Castle-by-the-Sea

Now a Guest House and Tea Rooms but proudly bearing the
Civic Society plate that for a short time during the 19th Cent.
it was the home of the acclaimed Victorian painter John Atkinson
Grimshaw. It is indeed well-named with its battlements and
proximity to the sea. When gas lamps were in use in Scarborough
some 50 years ago their flickering light lent an eerie atmosphere
to buildings such as this on a dark winter's night. More than enough
inspiration here for Grimshaw.
