Shearing Day
A couple of weeks ago, while on a walk through the valley which can be seen from my window, I got chatting with the farmer at Hazeldene Farm and made a mental note to go along to the farm's Shearing Day, which was today.
I've never seen a sheep being sheared in real life before, so I was just as fascinated as all the children who were gathered around with their parents to watch. Wandering around the farmyard after the shearing had finished, I bumped into my friend and work colleague S and her family. We all stood and chatted for a while, during which her younger son B announced that he was becoming a vegetarian, now that he had seen the animals close up and realised that the farmer didn't just keep them as pets. But after acknowledging that being vegetarian would mean giving up his favourite roast chicken, he considered his options and said he would perhaps just stop eating lamb and pork. I'm now wondering if he has eaten the delicious-sounding belly pork recipe that S had prepared for their dinner tonight...
