In Manchester so that Matthew can play in a chess tournament. The tournament is part of a series of events designed to whittle the approximately 60,000 entrants down to to a final few hundred. The event in Manchester is the 'Northern Gigafinal', although in this case 'northern' seems to cover a hell of of a lot of what I would refer to as the south! It seemed to be 'anywhere north of Oxford'.

He won three games out of the six, and was a little disappointed not to win a 4th as he missed a chance to checkmate and realised one move too late. But overall that was about where he expected to place. Not quite good enough to make it into the final round, but not bad. He'd probably do a lot better if he actually practised, but the relationship between practice and improvement is one he doesn't yet seem to grasp ;)
