Power from below
Our hotel for the first night in Iceland has an en-suite geothermal power station.
The Svartsengi geothermal power station is a 76.5MW power station on the Rekjanes peninsula in Iceland. It also provides the hot water for the Blue Lagoon spa as an accidental by product. When the plant was built in 1976 they simply emptied the waste water into the porous lava field surrounding the plant, but the water was so saturated with silica that it quickly formed a white impermeable seal and the water pooled in lagoons that the locals were quick to exploit for warm water bathing. The public bathing facilities opened in 1987 and is now a mega attraction for hordes of visiting tourists - but not us (this time).
I thought the shot rather reminded me of an Alan Parson Project album cover - so I opted for another square format and easily just imagine the black vinyl inside.
