Meadowbank River Works
As I write, the very far north of New Zealand is experiencing some dreadful stormy weather. It is very worrying for those living in the top of the North Island. I doubt the storm will reach the central part of the country where we are. We have had a cloudy day here, miserably cold.
We walked as far as the bridge which provides access to Meadowbank Station. There the huge stepping stones have been re-instated in the river just downstream of the bridge. Immediately upstream there is machinery in the river bed working away at remedial river works. Work is being undertaken to further protect the bridge structure, to re-build a weir in the river and to sort out the water supply intake to Meadowbank Station. As you can see in this image the project is requiring considerable rock work. Gyspy is curious about the silent monster in the water. The operator was temporarily absent on a river inspection trip downstream in 4x4 vehicles with contract staff and a District Council river engineer. All this current activity in the river demonstrates the destructive power of flood waters in the Taylor River during storm events. It is to be hoped we have had the last of the big storms here for this winter.
